This isn’t common knowledge though I mean it’s the first time I’ve heard that depression could start in the gut there’s a direct connection between the gut and the brain … when he started to get sick he had um … it’s challenging because it wasn’t textbook … you always have to look at the gut! you know Paige, in shifting gears a little bit … shifting gears in a big way another thing you said to me that I found extremely interesting was that that we actually have well we need to understand that we have two brains one you know our cranial brain and then we have a brain in the gut in the and how that relates in healing talk about that and so the gut we call is the second brain and what encompasses the gut is it’s found in the tissue lining of the esophagus the stomach the small intestines and the colon it contains about a hundred million neurons which is more than you find in the spine which is pretty incredible, in the gut, in the gut, it also has major neurotransmitters, most people think that the neurotransmitters are all up here but they’re in the gut as well so when somebody is having depression or anxiety or some type of mood that they think something’s really wrong right away they want to go see a therapist or psychiatrist okay and it gets focused in that area and what I’m saying is you’ve got to start looking at the gut if you start cleaning up the gut you start cleaning up the brain when you start cleaning out the gut you start to not have as much depression if you start cleaning out the gut the anxiety doesn’t happen as much so there’s a direct connection between the gut and the brain and so many times we think the brain is going to talk to the rest of the body which it does but the gut informs the brain so many times so it’s not just here it’s here, it’s here in the gut as well this is in common knowledge though I mean it’s the first time I’ve heard that actually depression could start in the gut yeah and you know it’s been my, I mean that’s huge, that it’s been my very personal experience that you know with the clients and patients I have and my husband because, you’re going to get me crying, who was sick for almost four years when he started to get sick he had, he started to not be able to remember people’s names he couldn’t put sentences together he became very very sick he was also suicidal now I’m in the field of behavior health, so thank goodness but I also bring in the medical component and work with you know the integrative doctors because what was happening to him was multiple things were going on with him one of many was that in his gut he had something called leaky gut and it’s like sebo its small intestinal, I’ve heard a little bit about that yeah and a lot of times what happens is it interferes with normal digestion and absorption and if you’re not absorbing your food you’re not getting nutrients and if you’re not getting nutrients oh it’s not going to the brain so you know for him when there’s damage of the stomach lining in the small intestines that wreaks havoc with the brain so when someone is going through suicidal thoughts depression anxiety you always have to look at the gut because what’s going on in the gut maybe it is just the brain but from my experience most of the time there’s a combination so gut is connected connected to emotional wellness so people think it’s just the brain that’s connected to emotional wellness, and I’ll tell you something and I’ll say this on camera because I feel very strong about this, when he first got really really ill intuitively I knew something was going on in the body I didn’t know what it was even though his sign showed depression, suicidal, anxiety couldn’t string sentences together he couldn’t even look at an email he couldn’t listen to we have a water fountain in the backyard that was too loud it was too much for him to take in and he’s just a die-hard a reader he couldn’t read a book any kind of sensories so when that first started I hopped in the car and this is when we were living in Washington DC and I drove them up to Johns Hopkins, Johns Hopkins is top notch we went into the emergency room and they basically said to us oh well this looks like bipolar and I looked at the doctor and I went I am in the field this is not bipolar there’s something else going on this is what I’m noticing and they still wanted to focus just on the behavior health and that was not what the issue was, so had I have just accepted that yes it was this and didn’t have this other information and didn’t do the medical research, had you not been his advocate, they you would have given him medication for something for the brain and what happens a lot of times is the medication that you take for the brain is going to mess up their gut, now I don’t disagree that there is a space and a time and a place for each individual to have medication for that but for what happened to my husband and for the many many patients and clients that come see me when I start talking to them about the gut asking questions what we start to realize is oh my gosh let’s take a stronger look at your gut and I’m passionate about this I’m sorry Silke, I have to say this I’m passionate about this because I’ve been in the field of behavioral health for so many decades and I work with the medical component because you can’t just listen and just focus on here there’s so much else that’s going on in here that needs to be addressed. Well it’s interesting you say that I mean I just recently had an experience where I went to the doctor my gynecologist as I’ve been going to and one of the things I really wanted in for my fatigue and you know as we discussed this is to get back on my B12 shot and you know and she’s looking at me like I’m crazy like you know B12 you don’t need this, to do this and is this the testing and that, she was ready to just prescribe antidepressants like like that, but something that is healthy and and it would actually help you clear the symptoms no, and I actually saw on my bill that there was a that they did some sort of mental health assessment, that’s a whole other story, but that’s what people go through that just because you think that there’s something natural to do you’re somehow crazy we need to stop that sort of thinking, that’s why I teach people to trust what’s in here! let me go back to your husband again for a minute because I know that that was the very you know impactful on your life of course, he was at death’s door three times can you tell us little what happened? yeah so what was so difficult was because he didn’t have a black and white type of disease or illness, it’s challenging because it wasn’t textbook so you know when you’re working full-time and back then I was working two jobs had my own business and I was the director of behavioral health for a large international company so i was working both of those and trying to figure out you know what’s going on intuitively I knew this was not a mental health issue so when you have to have multiple or when you have to do a lot of the medical research on your own and figure out you know what’s going on there were multiple times when he was at death’s door stop and I didn’t know if he was going to make it the next day and you know there were times too that he would just you know rest his head in my lap and say, am I ever going to get better, so when you don’t have all of the information you know it’s really hard to keep going for somebody else but you do it so, for when you’re dealing with someone who has got a really difficult type of disease and you don’t have a lot of support that’s around you somebody’s got to be the advocate you know for what’s going on and I I believe that’s why for me everything that I’ve gone through in my life that’s why I’m here that’s why I want to get everything out to say okay wait a minute I’ve experienced so much I’ve seen it in my clients I’ve seen my patients I’ve seen it in you know my personal life that if I can bring information that just gives you something, I’m not a doctor but if i can give you this information where you go oh my gosh I’m hey that sounds like me or that sounds like someone who I know who I love who’s sick right now let’s go check this out where do I go who do I speak with, so I had a team I had a team of different kind of integrative holistic doctors and i also had Western doctors as well because there is a place and a space for both of them to bring them together. Paige, I thank you for for sharing that I knew I know that was going to be a hard question that I didn’t mean that you know could put you in the spot, I’m here because people need to know what has gone on it so if there’s other people out there who are experiencing it that’s how we help each other, and that’s kind of you know there are people out there there are thousands of people out there that are going through. you know these kind of things, everyday, and look at, look at how connected you are and how many people you know and still how difficult it is to find help, just imagine what people who don’t have your resources what they’re going through, I know and you know i know we’ve been talking about different things that you know we can do to maybe get help get that information out, tell us how do you help people that are in that situation, how do you work with them? well I can tell you because we’re hoping to reach so many people to better their lives you know I put together different trainings different workshops curriculums different ebooks that they can access to learn more about this whether they want it for their own health or for their loved one that’s sick or imagine this, being proactive so they can you know function not to function but thrive and you know a big thing that I see is especially as we get older people survive with their symptoms and I’m like, is there a reason why you think you just have to survive with your symptoms, you can actually thrive over 50, things might you know hurt a little bit more than when you were 25 but but you know you can actually thrive with it, so oh there’s so many different things you know that I can get out there that we can do to get to people to help them, and the message here too is and your husband was a death’s door three different time but but he didn’t go through it, I know it not everybody, there is hope there’s there’s there if you look for it, and then hopefully you know by getting this message out you can help we can help them find some answers, yeah and you know because I know that we’re going to get into that more Silke when we talk about the caregiving so i’ll save some of that but i do want to say one thing now but i might say the caregiving am a knot will see this is what I tell my clients my patients and this is how I live my life, if you want to search for somebody or something or a team healing team to help you or a loved one put it on your vision board put it out to the universe, I am looking for someone who’s specific in this this this and this and that is how things have always come to me, because I’m connected to myself I’m connected to what’s going on this is what I need and even, when i’m not sure exactly because no one’s ever one hundred percent not even me, but even when we know we need something you put it out there i’m not sure exactly what I need but I need something to help with XYZ, it will show up that doesn’t always mean that the person that you love is going to live … let’s stop there … … oh we’re laughing, no Paige, that was that was that was really really … this is just not right you guys are having me cry … was that Barbara Walters enough for you??
