Poi next fitness craze

Poi next fitness craze

Poi could be the next fitness craze. That’s according to PHD student
Kate Riegle-Van West who began studying poi
in a programme designed to help the elderly after using it
as a rehabilitation tool herself. Hania Douglas
went along for a lesson today. Swinging poi is good
for the body and the soul. That’s according to a new study. Kate Riegle-Van West
is the mastermind behind swing poi, a fitness programme
for people aged 60+, and she’s writing her
PHD dissertation on the benefits. This poi is very different
from the poi Maori are used to, but they fly just the same. One of the benefits
is physical fitness. And these avid followers of
the programme couldn’t agree more. And they hope to see more people
getting into poi, Maori and non-Maori,
young and old. No doubt we’ll soon
be seeing the poi everywhere. Hania Douglas, Te Karere
